List of General Events on January-1948

4- January-1948 Burma achieved its independence from Great Britain. In 1989, Burma changed its name to Myanmar to reflect the multi-ethnic composition of the country. Apart from the Burmese, the main ethnic minority groups are the Karen, Shan, Mon, Chin, and Kachin. Just as the Burmese did against the British, almost all of these ethnic groups have struggled against the Burmese government for self-determination.
20- January-1948 1. Bomb exploded near Birla House during a prayer meeting of Gandhi. 2. Three member UN Commission for investigation/mediation on Kashmir. 3. K.M. Cariappa succeeded Lieutenant General D. Rissell as the Army Commander, Delhi and East Punjab and was responsible for conducting the operation in Kashmir.
27- January-1948 Gandhiji visits Mehrauli Muslim Fair.
31- January-1948 Cities swept by riots in wake of Gandhi murder.
